ELECTRICITY
I'm more proud of my play ELECTRICITY than anything I've done. So thrilled it is now in year 7 of its unbelievable journey.
ELECTRICITY follows two former closeted classmates who decide to share a hotel room after their 10th high school reunion. They have a connection, an "electricity" that brings them back to that same room after each reunion for the next 3 decades. It's funny, sexy and tells the story of generations of the LGBTQ+ community. It has received such rewarding reviews and audience feedback that inspires us after each performance to keep tell the this story.
After an amazing 11 week held-over / extended premiere in Los Angeles (co-starring Kevin Scott Allen) the show moved to a real hotel room at INNdulge in Palm Springs (co-starring Mel England) as an immersive theater experience. Then we added regular performances as Oscar's Cabaret Theater. We closed during COVID and but came roaring back once again at Oscar's. It's been so rewarding. Ending a nearly 4 year run we became the longest running play in Palm Springs. I also got to co-star along side Ralph Scott in a production at Evolution Theatre Company in Columbus, Ohio, as well as a tour with Mel to the St. Paul / Minneapolis area where ELECTRICITY was named one of the Best Out Of Town Productions of the Year (alongside HAMILTON!). Mel and I have performed ELECTRICITY in New York City as part of World Pride and the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. We closed during COVID and but came roaring back once again at Oscar's. From there on the Desert Rose Playhouse. That production was nominated for 6 Desert Theater League Awards in the Professional Drama category; Outstanding Drama, Outstanding Direction (Steve Rosenbaum), Lead Actor in a Drama (both myself and Mel England), Outstanding Lighting (Mariah Pryor) and I'm nominated for The Bill Groves Award for Outstanding Original Writing. We have performed it on the stage at the Palm Springs Cultural center where it was also filmed in front of an audience. It's been so rewarding. Ending a nearly 4 year run we became the longest running play in Palm Springs, but we are very excited as our team of producers and investors plan for an Off-Broadway run!

TV THERAPY
TV THERAPY is a project of mine that I'm having a terrific time doing. I play a therapist and each episode I have a session with a different classical TV character as they would be today, with all their baggage. They aren't TV characters to Dr. Stephen Nielsen, they are just clients with some very odd issues. First up, is Tabatha (Erin Murphy) from BEWITCHED and Mary Ann (Dawn Wells) from GILLIGAN'S ISLAND (in her last hilarious performance). Both were directed by Billy Clift and filmed like a normal shoot. Once the Corona Virus social distancing started I realized we could keep going with this concept if I switched my "therapy session" to Zoom (like therapist were doing in real life). I would not only act and write but moving forward I'd need to direct and edit. Getting to create these shows for the fans of the original shows and getting to work with TV idols has been a blast. And I've kept the Zoom premise so that I can get stars no matter where they live. I have Cissy (Kathy Garver) from FAMILY AFFAIR and a group therapy session with dinosaur trauma siblings Will and Holly Marshall (Wesley Eure & Kathy Coleman) from LAND OF THE LOST. Bob Bergen plays the voice of Porky Pig so I thought let's do one with him believing he actually is Porky. And everyone's favorite werewolf, Eddie Munster (Butch Patrick) from THE MUNSTERS. Season two included hilarious episodes with Johnny Whitaker (SIGMUND AND THE SEA MONSTERS), Jon Provost (LASSIE), Alexandra Paul is a delight spoofing her character on BAYWATCH. Juliet Mills is perfection as Nanny once again (THE NANNY & THE PROFESSOR). Larry Mathews is Ritchie from THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW and Ted Lange is everyone's favorite bartender, Isaac from THE LOVE BOAT. Season three is starting off with Marc Copage once again playing adorable Corey from JULIA and Darby Hinton tries to convince Dr. Nielsen that his is actual the real son from the show DANIEL BOONE. Lots more terrific stars coming up!! All the episodes can be watched below or on YouTube.

MY SISTER IS SO GAY
My Charles Nelson Reilly classmate, Wendy Michaels, and I co-wrote / co-produced and co-star in our comedy MY SISTER IS SO GAY. We have a to die for cast headlined by Loni Anderson as our mother, Tilky Jones, Debra Wilson and Rae Dawn Chong. We did the first two seasons as short webseries episodes. Sam Irvin directed the first season & Billy Clift the second. Feedback has been terrific and we had a blast doing the show. You can see everything on Amazon Prime all combined as 3 "episodes".

ZOOM ANTHOLOGY
During the social distancing from the Corona Virus I had to find a way to be creative. Michael Vaccaro said let's do a short film that we can make over Zoom. I wrote, directed and edited ZOOM SEX. Michael and I had a lot of fun with it and people seemed to like so I kept on going. I made ZOOM DATE with Jeffrey Patrick Olson and then ZOOM NAKED with David Pevsner. Michael made another called ZOOM AUDITION and then we finished off our "ZOOM ANTHOLOGY" together again with Michael writing ZOOM COCKTAIL which is Michael, Jeffrey Patrick Olson and I with Jason Stuart guest starring. If you have a few minutes, I think you'll enjoy these! They just got picked up by happiTV.

CHILD OF THE '70S
Sad to say good-bye to CHILD OF THE '70S and the role of James Hunter. It was an honor to be among the talented cast of Michael Vaccaro's comedy for all five seasons. CHILD OF THE '70S definitely wasn't my project (I'm just an actor that Michael was gracious enough to let ad lib a bit in nearly every scene) but I'm including it in this list because the show became my family. My co-stars included Ann Walker, Susan Olsen, Carole Ita White, Bruce Vilanch, Geri Jewell, Judy Tenuta, Randy Jones, Lynne Marie Stewart, Donna Pescow, Ted Lange, Elizabeth Regen, Beverly Sanders and Gina Hecht...and that's only a partial list. So grateful to Michael Vaccaro for the fun and the friendships. Here's a link to watch.
THE JONESES UNPLUGGED / aka LOVE UNPLUGGED
I've ghost written several TV movies (that means basically writing them and not getting credit) but THE JONESES UNPLUGGED is the first TV movie to get that writing credit along side my partner on this--Larry LaFond. THE JONESES UNPLUGGED starred Mischa Barton, Sean Faris, Markie Post and David Ogden Stiers (which was this fine actor's last TV credit). Larry and I didn't have anything to do with the shooting of the film, which was directed by Bradford May but we got to visit the set as "the writers" which was fun. (The title was changed to LOVE UNPLUGGED.)
SHE'S STILL ON THAT FREAKIN' ISLAND
I've always loved GILLIGAN'S ISLAND and can't believe that I actually got to be stranded on it with Mary Ann (the fabulous Dawn Wells) in our spoofs of what it would be like if she were STILL on that freakin' island. Dawn became a dear friend since we started this project. Her passing from Covid-19 has been a giant loss to all who loved her. We had plans to make more FREAKIN' ISLAND shows but we were sidelined by Covid and then of course with her passing. I'm so thankful we have these two trips to the Island.

IT HAD TO BE YOU
Larry LaFond and I got story credit for this one, but I'm putting this is writing, the script we delivered was much funnier and just plain fun than what they eventually turned it into. But what can you do? IT HAD TO BE YOU starred Torrey DeVitto, Corbin Bernsen, Michelle Hurd and the fabulous Jenifer Lewis. |
MODD COUPLES
FROM HERE ON OUT
HERE TV is the first all gay premium cable TV channel. I was beyond excited when Paul Colichman and David Millbern green-lit me to create their first sitcom. They said spoof us, so I created a show about making an ultra sexy, naked beef-caked filled series at a small gay network--a bit of a cross between 30 ROCK and TOOSTIE. I played a spoof of myself, the writer, who has to make his dream show, GUY DUBAI: INTERNATIONAL GAY SPY, a series on the lowest budget in the history of television, while keeping it a secret that his gay star isn't gay. FROM HERE ON OUT was an amazing experience--I got to create, write and star in my own network series. I was in on the casting, and we put together a dream team. We found amazing super hot looking guys--like the network wanted, but they were also truly funny--a combination that was originally thought impossible. And then we surrounded them with fantastic and hilarious character actors like Juliet Mills, Julie Brown, Sam Pancake, Anthony Marciona and the late and very very great Suzanne Whang. Sam Irvin directed us and pulled off a miracle with an insanely short shooting schedule. I'm so proud of this show and we quickly became the highest rated series on HERE TV. You can watch FROM HERE ON OUT on Amazon Prime.

COST OF LIVING
Larry LaFond and I banded together again to co-write and co-produce a short comedy film about life 50 years after global warming. It has aged, a little too. It's just as timely now as when we made it in 2009. Larry directed and I starred along with my dream cast of Jim J. Bullock, Molly Hagan and Greg Mullavey. We had so much fun doing this and I urge you to watch. It's a fun 14 minutes. I think comedies about global warming are rare and I wish, those fighting that fight could discover this piece. GAYDAR
The 20 minute short film GAYDAR is really the beginning of creating my own projects. I teamed up with my pal Larry LaFond to co-write / co-produce, plus I starred and Larry directed. We did every trick in the book to raise the money to shoot this on a big fancy 35mm movie camera (which we later learned was the very camera that shot the original STAR WARS film and later sold at auction for over half a million dollars).
Our cast included Jim J. Bullock, Bryan Dattilo (from DAYS OF OUR LIVES), Jennifer Echols and the fantastic Charles Nelson Reilly (who was my beloved acting teacher). For a short film GAYDAR was an incredible success. It was in over 120 film festivals (10 is normally considered pretty darn good). It played across the country and really all over the world, winning a bunch of awards along the way. It also spun off the Gaydar Gun toy which my brother Bret Ray created (I was the writer of the jokes and the gun's voice). A few years ago the California Independent Film Festival named GAYDAR as one of the top 20 comedy short films of all time. Oh, and I wrote the theme song! Only song I've ever written. It was brilliantly performed by Gwen Stewart. |
